

When design tools and modern translation management systems used are together they are extremely powerful tools for localization. Then I created an Adobe XD file and video with before and after artboards showcasing the changes I made. Once I identified the problems, I found solutions to prevent them from occurring. I did all of this before internationalizing my Adobe XD design to learn how and where the translated text “broke” the design. I then translated the asset’s content by importing it into the TMS Lokalise by using its Adobe XD plugin, running machine translation on the text, and then exporting the translated text to my Adobe XD artboards using the same plugin. In the end, I chose a group of artboards from the LinkedIn Learning course Adobe XD Essential Training: Design by Dani Beaumont.

Finding an asset with enough content and diversely formatted text to reveal scenarios where localized text broke the design was important when choosing an asset. To begin, I found an Adobe XD asset that hadn’t yet been localized. This is important to me because foreseeing and preventing issues before they appear in localized designs is key to meeting deadlines and staying on budget. During my research I found insightful blogs about the topic, but no technical guidance for internationalizing designs in Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, and I was interested in the details. My motivation comes from the fact that design led localization is becoming more popular but there are very few resources that share anything more than a high-level overview of how to incorporate internationalization at the design stage. With my project, I wanted to learn how I could prepare an Adobe XD app prototype for localization. The ideal time to begin the localization process is at the onset of designing a digital product and the first step is designing for internationalization. Preparing for the inevitable can make the localization process efficient and effective, lowering the costs associated with the localization process and driving greater ROI.
